Learn how to make two natural indigo vats, one using henna and Michel Garcia’s 1-2-3 natural indigo vat. In this workshop you will learn how to make a clay resist to hand-paint and hand-print your designs. Students will have an opportunity to explore indigo dyeing and learn a handful of traditional + contemporary shibori techniques. Students are encouraged to bring 3-5 pieces of fabric / projects from home to dye during this workshop.
Students will begin by painting and printing their own designs on fabric using a non-toxic clay resist. The second week, students will learn how to make and maintain a natural indigo vat and dye the textiles they designed with clay resist the first week. Students will leave with samples of cloth with unique designs that can be used in future projects, i.e. quilts or making pillows . This is a great class for all levels of dyers, printmakers and designers.
*Shibori is the ancient Japanese form of resist dyeing that creates beautiful designs and patterns.
